47 years is a long-time to be racing. Heck, most the MBSLM drivers aren’t close being 47 years old. Wakefield’s Mike Benson started racing in high school and his number 71 represents the year he graduated from high school. The Wakefield Public Schools Transportation Diretor will be back at it again this year in his 2016 GRT G-16 Camaro.

Along the way in a career that started in 1970 at in Creighton, Nebraska, Benson has raced at various tracks in Nebraska, Iowa an South Dakota picking up track championships at the Interstate Speedway in 1985 and Park Jefferson in 1994.

Benson’s crew includes Crew Chief Pat Pierce and crew members Russ Pierce, Jacob Pierce, Bob VanderVeen, Dan Nelson and Preston Pierce. Sponsors include Pierce Family Racing, Dr. Alison Benson MD, Sidelines Bar & Grill and Sandy’s Kitchen.

As for his racing goals: “Continue racing through the first year of Social Security,” comments Benson. “Jack Golder told me that he wanted to still be racing when he was drawing is social security. So to remember and hnor him (Jack Golder) that is what we are doing.”
